Cephenemyia trompe
In 2008, Rīga Zoo entomologists Aleksandrs Napolovs and Ilona Roma participated in a research project on the rhinoceros shiner (Cephenemyia trompe) in Latvia. A model of a reindeer was made as a trap for the rhino. To simulate a “gasp”, a system was set up to release carbon dioxide through the “nostrils” of the model. Reindeer urine was used to attract insects.
