European Fire Salamander
The European Fire Salamander occurs in central and southern Europe. The countries of occurrence are Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine.
The numbers are decreasing. The main threats to the species are habitat destruction, pollution of breeding sites by agrochemicals, collection for the pet trade, introduction of predatory fish and crayfish, as well as chytridiomycosis, an infectious disease caused by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans.
Conservation
■ Listed in Appendix III of the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats as a protected fauna species.
