CITES II

Guanacos occur in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Peru. The current population is estimated as 1.5–2 million, most of them are found in Argentina. The numbers currently increase. The population still could decline again if faced with excessive hunting and habitat degradation from livestock overgrazing.

Conservation

■ Listed in Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, or Washington Convention).
