The biggest zebra species to inhabit the Zoo's African Savannah exhibit
2020.11.26.

Two Grévy's Zebras (Equus grevyi) have been present at the Zoo's exhibit of African Savannah already for more than a month. Since our Zoo's priority is to work with threatened species, the specimens of the more common zebra species kept in our Zoo previously, Chapman's Zebras, were sent to Ukraine. Two female Grevy's Zebras, Greta and Inaya, arrived from zoos in Germany and France.

Grévy's Zebra is not only the biggest but also the most threatened of zebra species. It is found only in East African countries of Kenya and Ethiopia, and there are only about 2,800 specimens left in the wild. Grévy's Zebra is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species already since 1986. The species' captive population data are recorded in the International Studbook, and a Grévy's Zebra EEP (Endangered Species Programme) was established within EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) in 1991.
