New babies to Vicuñas and Crowned Cranes
2021.07.23.

On 21 July a baby was born to the rarest of South American camelid species, Vicuñas. A Vicuña calf was born on the afternoon, in full sight of the Zoo public. A few days before, Grey Crowned Crane pair hatched a chick.

Vicuña babies are precocial (born relatively mature). They come with open ayes and already have coats. Within just few hours after the birth, they are able to stand up and follow their mothers. That is a matter of survival, to be able to travel with the herd and avoid predators.

See the video: the birth of the Vicuña baby and its life at the age of 30 minutes and 2 hours:

Grey Crowned Crane pair now has a baby too. Hatched late in summer, this chick actually is an exceptionally early chick. In the wild, Grey Crowned Cranes live in Southern Hemisphere where seasons of the year are reversed. Currently there is an early spring in Africa south the Equator!

Watching the video of Crowned Cranes, note that the dance of male crane in fact is not a happy dance. With this behaviour, the parent tries to scare away possible intruders that could threaten his little offspring. When you visit the Zoo, be understanding and mind your safety. Please do not disturb the birds and keep off the fence.
