Blue Sheep, a new species to the Zoo
2020.11.25.

At the end of 2020, Riga Zoo is welcoming another new species. Three female Blue Sheep, or Bharals (Pseudois nayaur) just arrived from Tallinn Zoo. They are exhibited at the Zoo's Goat Hill.

After a while they will be joined by an unrelated male from some other zoo. To manage the captive population of this species, a European Studbook has been created in 1997. The wild population of Blue Sheep dwells in inaccessible regions of the Himalayas. As their name implies, these wild sheep have a blue tint to their wool that makes them almost invisible against the background of blue-grayish rock of their mountainous habitat.
