2021.10.21.

The final of the 17th Annual Pumpkin Championship of Latvia, organized by Maxima retail chain, took place at the Zoo, with the help of Dainis Zāģeris and Māris Krievelis, Latvia’s strongmen. For the first time an additional contest was held for younger gardeners, with the participation by Mazpulki, a Latvian rural youth organization.

Of youngest contestants, the winner was Elīna Kalniņa with a pumpkin that weighed 64 kg. The second and third place was taken by Dārta Popluga and Renārs Petzāls, with pumpkins of 58 and 52 kg respectively.

The winner of the main contest was Irina Badovska with a pumpkin that weighed 294 kg. The second and third place was taken by Gatis Badovskis with pumpkins of 263.5 and 183 kg respectively.

(The Latvia's biggest pumpkin record up to date is 574 kg, set in 2018 by Luīze Neimane from Kuldīga.)

The Zoo's Servals, Zulu and Kofi, were able to try some of this year's new pumpkin harvest. Pumpkins were presented to them as an environmental enrichment to play with (carved pumpkins were filled with morsels of their favourite food).
