Red Deer is distributed across Europe, North Africa and Middle East. The numbers are increasing. The threats include the intermixing of the various subspecies and hybridization with Sika Deer (Cervus nippon) in areas where both species coexist. The introduction of North American deer species to Europe has resulted in the spread of infections and parasites. In some areas overhunting and habitat loss affect the populations.
