Secretary Bird occurs in Sub-Saharan Africa. The population is decreasing. Major threats are poaching and habitat destruction.
Conservation
■ Listed as Endangered (EN) in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species since 2020.
■ Within EAZA, captive population data are recorded in European Studbook since 2011. Currently the studbook is kept by Jersey Zoo.
■ Listed in Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, or Washington Convention).
