Royal Python is distributed in West Africa to Central Africa just north of the equator. The population is decreasing. Since 2021 the species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List. The main threat is international exotic pet trade.

■ Listed in Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, or Washington Convention).
