Panda Catfish is an South American species, an endemic to Peru. It occurs in the Ucayali river system, in the upper Amazon River basin. The Panda Catfish is relatively abundant, but a decline is suspected. The current population trend is unknown and requires further research. As a beautiful ornamental fish it is exposed to intense collection for the aquarium fish trade.
