Just a while ago Malaysian Painted River Turtle was common in peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra and Borneo. Now it is suspected that the numbers are decreased by at least 80% in the past three generations. Main threats include illegal collection as well as egg collection for food and sand mining.

Conservation

■ Included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 1982, listed as Critically Endangered (CR) since 1996.
■ The species is managed under the EEP (EAZA Ex-situ Programme).
■ Listed in Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, or Washington Convention).

■ Family Geoemydidae – Asian river turtles, Asian leaf turtles, Asian box turtles and roofed turtles
