Bactrian Camel

There are around 1.4 million of Bactrian Camels in the world, but almost all of them represent the domesticated form. The wild Bactrian Camels occur in some parts of northern China and Southern Mongolia in so small numbers they were considered extinct till it was found out that they in fact still existed.

Recent genetic research suggests treating the wild and domestic forms of Bactrian Camel as separate species, i.e. Camelus ferus (the critically endangered wild Bactrian Camel) and Camelus bactrianus (the domesticated form).
