October 26th, at the Latvian Pumpkin Championship, a new record was set by a pumpkin from Kuldīga County which reached 574 g, 170 kg more than the previous record set in 2016. The Championship at Riga Zoo was organised by Maxima Latvija for the 13th year in a row, honouring local Latvian vegetable farmers.
Second and third place in the Championship were won by pumpkins grown by the Neimanis family and Kozlovskis family, with those reaching 425 kg and 377 kg. These were followed by the Badovskis family’s giant from Skrunda, and the Neimanis family pumpkin, weighing 295,5 kg and 266,5 kg respectively.
On 26 October at 11:00 Latvia’s biggest pumpkins will be weighed and measured at the Zoo again, with the help of Kaspars Zlidnis, fitness expert, and Agris Kazeļņiks and Aivars Šmaukstelis, Latvia’s strongmen. This event will conclude the Annual Pumpkin Championship of Latvia, organized by Maxima retail chain already for the 13th time.
Several animal babies are born at the Zoo on autumn months. In fact, that is not that unusual since Zoo animals represent various regions of the world. In Latvia it is autumn now, but in Southern Hemisphere the spring is just arrived. So Grey Crowned Cranes from Southern Africa, Ring-tailed Lemurs from Madagascar and Capybaras from South America raise their babies in October.

On 6 September the two Riga Zoo's Galápagos Tortoises were weighed for the 18th time. This year Raimonds Bergmanis, the event's patron, attended only as an observer. Therefore, this time the task was undertaken by four strongest men from Riga Zoo staff.

On 8 September at 12.00–16.00 an event of I'm Growing Up Big, Strong and Healthy campaign will take place at Riga Zoo. The event is organized by Latvian Pediatric Association, Children's Clinical University Hospital and esAugu.lv.
2 August will be the name giving day to two Lynx kittens born at Riga Zoo on 28 March. The Zoo Lynx godparents, Jēkabpils City took the responsibility to chose the names. On 2 August at 15.00 the Lynx cub names will be announced by Raivis Ragainis, the Chairman of the Jēkabpils City Council.
Both Cinereous Vulture (or European Black Vulture, Aegypius monachus) chicks hatched in Riga Zoo will be included in the Cinereous Vulture reintroduction project in Bulgaria. The first of them, vulture young named Riga (hatched on 28 April), yesterday already headed to Bulgaria.

A new, unrelated European Gray Wolf pair was created at the Zoo's Affiliate Cīruļi a year ago. The new family now cares for its first offspring. Six wolf pups were born on 12 May, 2018.
Critically Endangered Waldrapp Ibises hatched a chick for the first time at Riga Zoo. The youngster develops well and is seen at the mixed species exhibit at Flamingo House.
Early summer is the time when many animal families have their offspring. Babies are born or hatched, and grow under their parents' care. Currently several Zoo animal families have or expect babies.
