Zoo's Galápagos tortoises to be weighed on 29 August

On Thursday 29 August at 13:15, the annual Galápagos Tortoises weighing event will take place already for the 19th time. The two giant tortoises, Čelsija and Trīne, will be weighed again, with the help of the event's patron, Raimonds Bergmanis, strongman, and Daumants Dreiškens, bobsledder and Olympic champion.

Animals at the urban environment of Riga

Do you know where a lion, a peacock, an owl, a deer are found in Riga? Many houses at Riga are decorated with animal figures. Riga Zoo invites you to observe the prototypes of these Riga's animals at the Zoo.

Kirk's Dik-dik, a new species in Riga Zoo

Riga Zoo now exhibits one of the smallest antelopes of the world, Kirk's Dik-dik (Madoqua kirkii). These animals can be seen at the African Savannah exhibit by the Zoo's Giraffe enclosure.

Name-giving to Lynx kittens together with Jēkabpils

On 13 August the name-giving to Lynx kittens took place together with the Zoo Lynxes' godparents from Jēkabpils Municipality. The young Lynxes were named Jete, Jakobīne and Lūsija. On this occasion, Lynxes received a special treat, made of beef and decorated with quail eggs. Aivars Kraps, Jēkabpils Mayor, also presented a gift to the Lynxes family, balls of the Jēkabpils basketball team "Jēkabpils lūši" (Jēkabpils Lynxes).

Lion Month at the Zoo: A Call to donate balls to the Zoo's Lions

Let's celebrate the Lion Month at the Zoo on 5–11 August! We call you to bring your leather ball (either football or volleyball, either new or used) to the Zoo, as a gift to the Zoo's African Lion pair, Kali and Tswanga, to promote their physical activities. All ball contributors will receive a Riga Zoo Yearbook 2018 with a signature of the Zoo's Director, Ingmārs Līdaka.

The first animals to inhabit the new African Savannah exhibit

Thanks to the financial support provided by SIA Latvijas Mobilais telefons (LMT), the first animals to inhabit the new African Savannah exhibit, Elands, Impalas and Kirk's Dik-diks, have already arrived to the Zoo.

Two seal young to be released into Baltic Sea

On 12 July at 12:00, two young Grey Seals will be released into the sea about 15 miles off the coast of Ventspils. They will be transported to the release area by the dive boat Neptūns.

Saved seal pups leave for their new home

Today two rehabilitated Grey Seals start their way from Riga to Belgrad Zoo, Serbia. Both of them were found on sea coast as exhausted small seal pups this March and brought to the Zoo to give them the second life.

Two new exhibits of invasive species to be opened on 19 June

On 19 June at 12:00 two new exhibits will be opened at Riga Zoo. Both of them are dedicated to newcomers to Latvia's fauna.

History Night at the Zoo on 18 May

When the events of Museum Night take place in the city, Riga Zoo invites visitors to its History Night in the evening of 18 May in cooperation with the Inquiry Service 1188. On 18 May the Zoo's ticket offices will be open until 22:00. Indoor exhibits will be open until 23:00, and it will be possible to walk the Zoo paths until 23:30.

Animal Family Days at the Zoo on 11 and 12 May

A Zebra baby born at the Zoo

A Chapman's Zebra foal was born on 7 May. Its first walk outdoors took place already on the second day of its life. The baby spends time together with its mother, Danija.

Let's look for European Tree Frog

Riga Zoo has decided to collect data on European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea) current distribution in Latvia. The species has been reestablished in Latvia in 1990ies, thanks to the reintroduction project performed by Riga Zoo.

Now Riga Zoo calls everybody to help by reporting known Tree Frog sites in Latvia. The best indication of Tree Frog presence is its song that can be heard on warm nights from late April to June.

The length and weight of the Zoo's largest snake measured

The Riga Zoo's largest snake is the Reticulated Python that is exhibited at the Tropical House and is 11 years old. Visitors often wonder how long this big snake really is.
