Cloud Rat, the Zoo's Animal of the Year 2020
2020.01.17.

According to the Chinese zodiac calendar, the Year of the White Metal Rat begins on 25 January 2020. We are happy to announce that a pair of such big, almost white, mysterious rats actually live in the Nocturnal Exhibit at Riga Zoo's Tropical House. These are the secretive Slender-tailed Cloud Rats of North Luzon, Philippines. What's more, the Zoo's Cloud Rats have welcomed their first baby very recently, it was born on 10 December.

Watch the video:

Cloud Rats are the largest mouse-like rodents (the largest species of subfamily Murinae). Their body weight is about 1,5–2 kg, the body length reaches about 30–50 cm. This is probably one of the most likeable rats, as its tail is not naked but well haired (the tail is 20–35 cm long).

The European Studbook of the Slender-tailed Cloud Rat is kept by Prague Zoo, Czech Republic, to maintain a healthy captive population of the species. Riga Zoo has been keeping Cloud Rats for 12 years already.  During these years, several Cloud Rat young were born, some of them have been sent to other zoos.

Please note that Winter Nights at the Zoo will continue until 26 January.
