Even behind closed gates, the Zoo's life continues
2020.04.23.

While Riga Zoo is closed to the public, the Zoo's life itself continues almost as usual. The Zoo's employees take care for animals as always, and Zoo animal lives follow their usual flow.

While you cannot come to meet animals at the Zoo, you still can follow animal stories on social media. Follow us and read some of the Zoo animal news at the Zoo's Facebook page.

New babies

First babies of this year – African Spoonbill chicks – are already grown up and joined the flock, and they now very much resemble adults. However, their neighbors, Waldrapp Ibises, just hatched a chick. We hope this youngster will grow up successfully and make a good addition to this Endangered species population in captivity. Read more on Waldrapp Ibises.

We are also very proud of the female baby Mishmi Takin. It was born on 28 February and was named Atēna (after the ancient Greek goddess, Athena). Mishmi Takin is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Read more on Mishmi Takins.

Patas Monkeys have babies as well. Two infants were born on 27 January and 2 February respectively. These youngsters are still quite shy and spend most of their time clinging to their mums. Read more on Patas Monkeys.

Female Double-wattled Cassowary has just laid a huge, light green egg, the first this year. This pair started nesting last August, with no success yet. We are full of hope for this year's nesting season. Cassowaries are relatives of Ostrich and have peculiar nesting habits. Female only lays eggs. Male alone do all the incubation and care for chicks. Read more on Double-wattled Cassowaries.

Jewel Cichlids just hatched babies at the Zoo's Aquarium! Watch the video.

#KukaiņuSalidojums!

Riga Zoo invited Zoo friends to jointly create The Insect Gathering – a virtual exhibition of various insects made of natural materials, as an educational pastime while staying at home.

Thanks to our follower responses several Insect Gathering galleries have been created: Gallery 1, Gallery 2, Gallery 3, Gallery 4. Watch, get an inspiration and create your own unique insect!
