Wolf pack inventory at Affiliate Cīruļi
2019.09.25.

This spring the Grey Wolf pair at Cīruļi produced seven offspring (even more than it was thought before!). This was the second successful breeding of the young parents. The proud father, Ķoniņš comes from the wild (it was rehabilitated as an orphaned young at Cīruļi in 2016), the mother, Alize, comes from the zoo in Sweden. The wolf cubs of this year grew up within the wolf pack under the care of their parents and older siblings.

In September, the young wolves had to undergo the veterinary checkup, vaccinations and microchipping. The work was done by the joint team of the Zoo's staff from both Cīruļi and Riga. Now we know that this year's offspring were 2 females and 5 males.

Now the Cīruļi wolf pack consists of 13 wolves – Ķoniņš and Alze, their four offspring of 2018 and seven young of this year.

Since 2003 Riga Zoo participates in the work of the Scandinavian Studbook of Grey Wolf and the conservation program of the species  in Northern Europe. The young wolves born at our Zoo are sent to Scandinavian zoos to include them in breeding and conservation programs.

In 2018, our young female wolf went to a zoo in Norway, and one of the young males, Glits, traveled to its hew home at Ranua Zoo, Finland.
