IUCN Red List: Vulnerable
Giraffes are distributed in Africa. The numbers are in decline. There are four major threats that affect Giraffe populations:
■ habitat loss due to deforestation, land use conversion, agricultural expansion and human population growth;
■ civil unrest and armed conflicts;
■ ecological changes associated with mining, agricultural expansion, and climate.
■ Giraffe is included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species since 1996, listed as Vulnerable since 2016.
■ Within EAZA, a Giraffe EEP (Endangered Species Programme) was established in 1990, it is coordinated by Zoo Gelsenkirchen.
