IUCN Red List: Vulnerable
Polar Bears dwell in Arctic. The countries of their occurrence include Canada, Denmark (Greenland), Norway, Russia, United States (Alaska) and occasionally Iceland. The current population trend is unknown. Major threats include global climate change, pollution and hunting.
■ Listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species since 1982.
■ Captive population data are recorded in International Polar Bear Studbook.
■ Within EAZA, a Polar Bear EEP (Endangered Species Programme) was established in 2006, it is coordinated by Artis Zoo, Amsterdam.
■ Listed in Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, or Washington Convention).
■ Listed in Appendix II of Bern Convention, as a strictly protected fauna species in Europe.
