Babies at the Zoo in autumn – baby Crowned Crane, Lemurs and Capybaras
2018.10.19.

Several animal babies are born at the Zoo on autumn months. In fact, that is not that unusual since Zoo animals represent various regions of the world. In Latvia it is autumn now, but in Southern Hemisphere the spring is just arrived. So Grey Crowned Cranes from Southern Africa, Ring-tailed Lemurs from Madagascar and Capybaras from South America raise their babies in October.

Riga Zoo’s Grey Crowned Cranes regularly lay their eggs at the end of summer that corresponds with the beginning of spring at Southern Africa. This year the Grey Crowned Crane chick at the Riga Zoo hatched on 10th September. It grows up under the care of its both parents.

Ring-tailed Lemurs gave birth to twins on 2nd October. They still spend most of their time on their mother’s back, being at the center of attention of the whole lemur group. All group members take care of the infants!

The morning of the 15th October brought another surprise. Triplets were born to the Zoo’s Capybara pair! Newborn Capybara cubs are already quite bulky (about 1 kg in weight), and they actively follow their mum everywhere.

Welcome to the Zoo!
