Now Zoo visitors can meet Krapa the Ringed Seal. After a successful rehabilitation at the Zoo's quarantine facility Krapa now dwells at the Seal Exhibit.
This seal pup was found stranded at Krapi beach in Pärnu County, Estonia, at the location near to the border of Latvia, on 10 March. With the help of Estonian and Latvian seal experts in collaboration with Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia and Estonian Wildlife Center, the animal was brought for rehabilitation at quarantine facility of Riga Zoo. This decision was made since Krapa needed a medical help and there were no seal rehabilitation facilities in Estonia. The baby seal proved to be a female and was named Krapa.
Krapa was quick to learn to feed on herring by herself. The tube feeding was needed only about a week.
Now Krapa has shed her white pup's fur completely and resembles an adult Ringed Seal. Being shed the fur, it started to go into the pool and learn to feed on fish within water.
Now Krapa consumes 2.5–3 kg (or 90 pieces) of herrings. She just reached the weight of 15.3 kg and was moved from the Zoo's quarantine facility to the seal pool where visitors can see her.
Krapa shares the pool with several Grey Seal pups. Most of them have been found stranded on Latvian beaches and rehabilitated at the Zoo's quarantine facility just like Krapa. The oldest and biggest specimen of the group is Hercogs the Grey Seal that was born at the Zoo this January. Read more about Hercogs here.
